Candida borneonana sp. nov., a new methanol-assimilating anamorphic yeast species isolated from decaying fruit in Borneo.

Authors: Sipiczki M
Abstract
Five strains of a previously unknown anamorphic, methanol-assimilating yeast species are described for which the name Candida borneonana is proposed. The strains were isolated from fruit waste collected in markets in Brunei (Borneo). The sequences of the D1/D2 domains of the large subunit rRNA genes, the ITS (internal transcribed spacer) regions and the 18S rRNA genes were identical in the isolates and differed from the corresponding sequences of all known yeast species. In a phylogenetic analysis of these sequences, the new species formed a cluster with Kuraishia species (the closest species was K. capsulata with 6% nucleotide substitutions in the D1/D2 domain). The type strain is 11-487T. It has been deposited in Centralbureau voor Schimmelcultures (U...

Access to Lifesaving Generic Medicines Threatened by US Trade Pact
Thu, 08 Sep 2011 05:43:00 +0100 | MSF News
New York, September 8, 2011 – Access to affordable lifesaving medicines will be threatened where they are needed most—in parts of the developing world—if the U.S. insists on implementing restrictive intellectual property policies in the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) trade agreement, the international medical humanitarian organization Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) warned today.
As the eighth round of closed-door TPP negotiations begins in Chicago this week, a leaked draft of the U.S. position indicates that the U.S. Trade Representative (USTR) is demanding aggressive intellectual property provisions that go beyond what international trade law requires, and is turning its back on previous commitments to safeguard public health in t...

Side effects of oseltamivir in end-stage renal failure patients
Sun, 26 Jun 2011 23:00:00 +0100 | Nephrology Dialysis Transplantation
Conclusions. Side effects were found to be mild and tolerable by participants, with no life-threatening events. The study showed that high compliance of this regime can be achieved. These results, together with no incidence of H1N1 cases in the sample participants, showed that the dosing regimen of 75 mg every 5 days in both haemodialysis and continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis patients is both tolerable and effective and should be considered for future prophylactic regimes. Performance and cross-cultural comparison of the short-form version of the CPQ11-14 in New Zealand, Brunei and Brazil.
Mon, 06 Jun 2011 23:00:00 +0100 | Health and Quality of Life Outcomes
The objective of this study was to examine the performance of the 16-item short-form impact version of the CPQ11-14 in different communities and cultures with diverse caries experience.MethodCross-sectional epidemiological surveys of child oral health were conducted in two regions of New Zealand, one region in Brunei, and one in Brazil. Children were examined for dental caries (following WHO guidelines), and OHRQoL was measured using the 16-item short-form item-impact version of the CPQ11-14, along with two global questions on OHRQoL. Children in the 20% with the greatest caries experience (DMF score) were categorised as the highest caries quintile. Construct validity was evaluated by comparing the mean scale scores across the categories of caries experience; correlational construct validi...
